The Isuzu Motors display at the ongoing Tokyo Motor Show may not have any show-stopping concept trucks, but it does showcase some cutting-edge transportation technologies.
On display are the the Erga Hybrid Bus and the Elf CNG-MPI. The former features a diesel/electric motor drivetrain that delivers 20% more efficiency over a conventional manual-transmission bus. It uses a CRDI diesel engine assisted by a high-torque electric motor. This is ideal for the stop-go traffic that these buses are subjected to.
The Elf, meanwhile, can run on compressed natural gas, a natural resource that the Philippines has an abundance of. However, we don\'t have the proper infrastructure to fully harness this fuel source (at least not yet). But Joseph Bautista of Isuzu Philippines says that his company has the technology, and that it is just waiting for the Philippines to be ready for it. Another challenge is that there is no tax incentive for hybrid vehicles in the country. These buses are more expensive, after all.
It will still take some time before we see hybrid buses and CNG-powered trucks on our roads, but here\'s hoping that day will come sooner than later.
