After having made inroads in the Visayas region since the early '90s, Maxxis is now aggressively entering Luzon and Metro Manila.
"Metro Manila and Luzon make up 60% of the Philippine tire market," North Trend Marketing chief operating officer Ronald Ang told TopGear.com.ph at a press dinner last night. North Trend Marketing is the authorized distributor of Maxxis tires in the country; Maxxis is a Taiwanese tire brand. "We've already made an impact in the Visayas and Mindanao so we've decided to finally step up our marketing of Maxxis in Metro Manila and Luzon."
Although Maxxis has been around since the early '90s, the previous distributor dropped the brand after the Asian economic crisis hit the Philippine market in 1997. But having seen the brand's growth in the Visayas region, North Trend Marketing, which was then only a dealer of Maxxis tires for the original distributor, decided to take over the brand's official distributorship in the Philippines.
"By 1999, we started talking to Maxxis, and in 2000, we were finally given the Maxxis distributorship in the Philippines," shared Ang.
North Trend Marketing currently sells Maxxis's complete product line, from tires for motorcycles and passenger vehicles to the more specialized industrial tires used by payload trucks. To help make the tire brand known in the market, the company has decided to make Maxxis an official partner of the National Association of Filipino Off-Roaders' racing series, as well as the tire sponsor of drifters Rad Albano and Pao Agregado in the Lateral Drift series.
Ang said that Maxxis is ranked ninth in the world among tiremakers in terms of production volume. For the Philippines, North Trend Marketing would like to see it go up against the major players soon.
"Right now, the top three are still occupied by the big-name brands like Bridgestone, Goodyear and Michelin," Ang pointed out. "We believe in the quality of Maxxis tires so we'd definitely like to compete with the best."
