The last day of the 2017 Manila International Auto Show was a pretty eventful one for Mazda Philippines, as the company finally turned over the inaugural batch of MX-5 RF units to their respective owners.
There were 11 RF units and owners in total, composed of the most die-hard Mazda Miata fans in the country. The ceremony was headed by Mazda Philippines head Steven Tan, as well as a very special guest: MX-5 chief designer and model program manager Masahi Nakayama, who personally handed the proud new owners the keys to their vehicles.
"Having Nakayama-san personally give the keys to them makes the event even more meaningful, as it is not always that one gets to meet the person who designed the car he or she drives," Steven said. "We expect the MX-5 RF to expand the audience of our best-selling sports car in the local market with security, durability and comfort added by the power-retractable hardtop version," he added.
Steven added that while the initial allocation of the MX-5 RF is sold out, reservations for the succeeding units have already been made. "This is a fraction of the number, this is 11. We have a total of about 35 already allocated and going to new parents," he told us. "Reservations go a couple of months down, so that's good."
Alright, alright. Admittedly, we're jealous of these dudes. Chances are, so are you. It's not every day you're handed the keys to a car as pretty as the RF, let alone by the designer who worked on it on the drawing board. Hopefully more units will arrive sooner rather than later. Keep your fingers crossed, guys.
