Just a few days before the production-version of the Porsche 918 Spyder officially bowed to the public at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the German carmaker had brought its highly anticipated hybrid roadster to the Nurburgring Nordschleife circuit where it proceeded to break the lap time set by its prototype in September 2012.

A year ago, the prototype 918 Spyder lapped the 20.6km Nordschleife circuit in seven minutes and 14 seconds. Last September 4, the production 918 Spyder clocked in at six minutes and 57 seconds, beating the protype by 17 seconds.

According to Porsche, all three of its test drivers--former world rally champion Walter Rohrl and factory test drivers Timo Kluck and Marc Lieb--were quicker than the existing record with each lap and posting lap times of less than seven minutes on numerous occasions. Ultimately, it was Lieb who posted the absolute best time of six minutes and 57 seconds with an average speed of 179.5kph.

The two production 918 Spyders used that day were reportedly equipped with the optional \"Weissach package,\" which enhances the car\'s driving dynamics, and rolled on the standard Michelin tires developed specifically for the car.

\"The radical hybridization of the 918 Spyder from the very outset is what made this lap record possible,\" said 918 Spyder project chief Frank Walliser. \"The lap time on the Nordschleife is and remains the toughest measure of a super sports car. Posting a time of six minutes and 57 seconds, we achieved a result of which everyone in the development team and at Porsche as a whole is rightly proud.\"
