A Tesla Model Y has successfully completed an autonomous delivery, driving out of the brand’s factory in Austin, Texas, to its new owner’s home, which was about 30min away.
Tesla posted a time-lapse video of the delivery on Instagram, where the self-driving Model Y was seen traversing highways, city streets, and finally residential areas without a hitch. It even stopped for pedestrians and encountered stop-and-go traffic. The Model Y ended its autonomous journey outside its owner’s apartment building, where it met its driver and a couple of Tesla officials.
The vehicle used in the video was equipped with Tesla’s Robotaxi software and Full Self-Driving (FSD) system. The Tesla Robotaxi launched in Austin just last week, with the service currently available to an exclusive list of influencers and key stakeholders. On the other hand, the FSD system is available in most global markets; however, it requires drivers to be awake and alert.

Earlier this year, Teslas were seen driving themselves out of a factory and onto loading docks for shipment. The brand saw this as a big step forward into ‘unsupervised’ self-driving, which the Robotaxi relies on heavily. The service currently has Tesla employees situated in the cab’s front seat as a safety monitor. There are also chase cars that follow each Robotaxi for added surveillance and emergency response.
Tesla didn’t say exactly how far this Model Y traveled, or how much the new Robotaxi software affected its battery. However, the video shows just how far Tesla’s autonomous driving system has come.
