TopGear.com.ph Philippine Car News - John McGuinness claims 18th Isle of Man TT trophy

Isle of Man legend John McGuinness opened the 2012 running of the island's namesake TT race by capturing his 18th victory of the annual event.

Guinness started the race for the Superbike class on the number one spot but dropped down to third place on the first lap. He then regained the lead on the second lap and proceeded to widen the gap with each lap. By the end of the fifth and penultimate lap, McGuinness held a 14-second lead over the second-place runner. McGuinness topped the six-lap, 364km race by completing it in one hour, 46 minutes and 3 seconds, giving him not just his 18th Isle of Man TT win but also his seventh victory in the Superbike class.

"Our crew in the pits is fantastic--they seem to have a magic wand that gets me out of there five seconds faster than anyone else so this is a big credit to them," McGuinness said of his victory after the race. "To compete in the TT and to finish a TT is incredible. To win one is amazing. But to win 18, well, I'm just lost for words."

McGuinness's record, though, is still nine victories shy of breaking the most Isle of Man TT wins set by another one of the event's legends, Joey Dunlop, between 1997 and 2000.
