Filipino-Swiss race driver Marlon Stockinger is currently testing with the Lotus team in Formula Renault 3.5. You will remember that the 21-year-old racer competed in this year's GP3 Series, in which he won in the second race of the second round held in Monaco. He has just tweeted that he placed seventh overall (out of 26 drivers) in the latest testing session, 0.789 second off the pace of first-placer Kevin Magnussen of the DAMS team. Stockinger's Lotus test teammate, Marco Sorensen, was fourth.
This latest development in Stockinger's promising racing career bodes well for his dream of becoming the first Filipino driver to compete in Formula 1. While it's true that Formula Renault 3.5 is still far from F1, the fact that a team that is present on the current F1 grid has invited Marlon to test for them, is indeed very encouraging.
Recently, Stockinger intimated to us that the Lotus team will come to the Philippines next year to do some promotional activities, and that he will be involved in the event.
Well, whatever happens with Marlon's present association with Lotus is just potentially icing on the cake. Just seeing the Philippine flag on an international formula car is already enough for many Filipino racing fans. Here's hoping we will soon see one of our own lining up on the F1 tarmac.
