The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has filed yet another show cause order, this time addressed to the owner of a vehicle with blinking rear lights. In a video circulating online, a Toyota Innova is seen reversing on a left-turn lane with white lights firing on its left and right sides.
These types of modifications or additions are completely unnecessary and even pose a serious risk to other drivers and pedestrians. The fast blinking and the harsh white light can distract or temporarily blind other road users, which could lead to accidents. From the video, it looks like the vehicle’s standard tail and brake lights are fully functional, and that is appropriately sufficient for regular roads and highways.
As per the show cause order, the vehicle owner and driver—if they are different people—will need to appear before the LTO and explain why they should not be charged for violating the list of approved vehicle accessories under Section 34 of Republic Act No. 4136, or the Land Transportation Traffic Code. Their licenses may also be revoked for being improper persons to operate a motor vehicle.

The vehicle owner will also need to bring the Innova involved on their appearance date, as it will be inspected by the LTO. The agency has already put the concerned vehicle on an alarm status and suspended the license of the owner for 90 days.
Hopefully, this situation serves as a wake-up call to other vehicle owners with additional lights. While they seem helpful and maybe even look cool, other motorists and pedestrians could end up getting hurt because of those extra, unnecessary lights.
