There’s recently been a lot of talk about the Boracay Bridge Project, as the proposed infrastructure has been facing opposition and criticism from residents and the local government alike. Despite that, however, the project will be pushing through.

The Department of Public Works and Highways has just awarded the project to San Miguel Corporation. It has an approved cost of P7,780,548,897.82.

According to the DPWH website, the bridge system will span 2.54km with a 1.14km limited-access bridge that will connect Boracay Island and Caticlan. The bridge will have public transport access, pedestrian lanes, and bikeways, and will facilitate the transport of solid waste and cargo. It will also have provision of carriage of utility lines, such as for telecommunications, water supply, and sewage.

According to a report by Manila Bulletin, the DPWH is under scrutiny as the project was never endorsed by the Malay municipal government or the Aklan provincial government. Malay Sangguniang Bayan (SB) member Alan Palma Sr. said that the decision to move forward was a “disrespect” to the local government units.

Palma reiterated a resolution from October 2024 that the SB “never received a formal” from San Miguel for the project. A resolution in 2025, meanwhile, said that there was “no public consultation” at all.

In a separate report by Inquirer.net, the SB also cited in its resolution the “environmental risks, overdevelopment, and the island’s long-term sustainability.”
