The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has announced that the EDSA Busway system now accepts cashless payments via GCash. Commuters can now scan a QR code that busway conductors will have on their person to pay for their fare.

Giovanni Lopez, secretary of the DOTr, then confirmed that the busway QR codes will not charge any transaction fees, and that the 20% discount for senior citizens, PWDs, and students will still be honored.

Ito pong cashless payment ay isang malaking pamamaraan upang sa ganoon masasabi natin na indeed the travel of our commuters is now more convenient,” said Lopez.

GCash for Business head Jong Layug followed up on the secretary’s promise by ensuring that the GCash SoundPay devices, on which the QR codes are placed, are safe and protected against hacking.

At the time of writing, 260 bus units on the EDSA Carousel have been supplied with QR codes. With their GCash apps, commuters will just need to tap on the QR reader and pay their exact fare.
