In an effort to alleviate ’ber month traffic amid ongoing EDSA rehabilitation work, the Department of Transportation is temporarily opening a segment of the EDSA Busway to private traffic for two weeks. During this period, private vehicles will be allowed to use the 7.9km stretch from NEPA Q-Mart in Cubao to Boni Avenue in Mandaluyong. The busway was reopened to private traffic on Monday this week, November 2.

The two-week duration was provided by DOTr secretary Vince Dizon, who said: “Siguro sabihin na natin, mga dalawang linggo siguro ’yun. Mabilis lang naman [...] ’Pag natapos ’to, magbabalik na tayo sa normal.” Dizon recently returned to the DOTr after swapping posts with Giovanni Lopez (currently the DPWH secretary) last week.

The Department of Public Works and Highways has reportedly completed a total of 990sqm of reblocking on the EDSA Busway, part of the efforts to rehabilitate EDSA. However, asphalt paving still needs to be applied to create a proper road surface. While this work is ongoing, private vehicles will be allowed to use the busway lanes.

After the asphalt work concludes, exclusive use of the EDSA Busway for public transport buses will resume. Lopez also said that motorists can expect a smoother driving experience by then.

Rehabilitation work on EDSA began last year, December 24, with the first phase (covering Roxas Boulevard to Orense Street) completed in July. The second and final phase (Orense Street to Monumento, Caloocan) is targeting completion in 2027.
