In a press conference held this morning, April 24, 2020, President Rodrigo Duterte announced that the ongoing enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) established to address the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic will continue to be in effect until Wednesday, May 15.
The latest decision comes based on the recommendations of the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases, which outlines that the National Capital Region, Region III, Region IV-A, and other high-infection areas will continue to be under ECQ. The same goes for provinces that are currently experiencing a high rate of positive cases. For places without high infection rates, they will fall under what the government calls ‘general community quarantine,’ which is a lighter version of the established ECQ.
The areas that are set to continue under ECQ until May 15 are: NCR, Benguet, Pangasinan, Bataan, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Tarlac, Zambales, Batangas, Cavite, Laguna, Rizal, Oriental and Occidental Mindoro, Albay, Catanduanes, Antique, Iloilo, Aklan, Capiz, Cebu, Cebu City, Davao del Norte, Davao City, and Davao de Oro. The ECQ in a number of these LGUs may be lifted earlier subject to review.
The initial quarantine period was scheduled to end on April 15, but the government announced earlier this month that it would be extended until April 30. Under the ongoing ECQ, public transport is suspended throughout the Luzon region. Once PUVs begin to operate, the IATF recommends for the Department of Health to recommend guidelines to prevent further spread of infection among commuters.
