In celebration of Independence Day, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) has announced that the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) will offer free rides during select hours on June 12, 2026. Specifically, train fares will be waived from 7am to 9am, and from 5pm to 7pm.
During off-peak hours, commuters can still avail themselves of a general 50% fare discount, which has been in effect since March. This discount has also been extended to the Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2).

These initiatives should be especially helpful on June 12, as the 2026 Manila Marathon will be taking place throughout the day. Around 25,000 runners are expected to participate, occupying the northbound and southbound lanes of the EDSA Busway from SM Mall of Asia to SM North EDSA.

The EDSA Bus Carousel will remain fully operational during that time, as it will exclusively use the outermost lanes by the sidewalks. The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority has advised motorists to take alternative routes or use public transportation when traversing EDSA.
For cyclists planning to commute, the MRT-3’s network of bike racks is now easier to navigate, thanks to mobility advocates Anthony Miles Jacob and Matthew Gan. The pair recently launched an online map detailing bike parking around Metro Manila’s train lines, including the LRT-1 and LRT-2. There is also a community-supported database that describes the bike racks around each train station.
