If you use the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) regularly, then you’re surely familiar with the ongoing widening project that San Miguel Corporation (SMC) has been working on. Well, we have some good news: It’s expected to be completed by the third week of December “in time for Christmas.”

The at-grade expansion will add two lanes on the northbound and southbound portions of the tollway, making it 6x6 lanes from Susana Heights all the way to Calamba.

“This December, as our countrymen prepare to celebrate Christmas and travel more to spend time with friends and family, they can look forward to a wider, better SLEX,” said SMC chairman and CEO Ramon S. Ang. “This will help in significantly reducing traffic buildup during the Holiday rush.”

After the widening of the 29km Muntinlupa-Calamba portion is completed, SMC Tollways will shift its focus towards the Calamba-Sto. Tomas portion of the expressway. The company expects to complete this part of the SLEX expansion program—which also includes the expansion of 20 bridges connecting the SLEX main carriageway—to be completed by July 2025.

“The SLEX expansion is a major undertaking that entailed significant effort and investment, and a lot of patience and cooperation from motorists and stakeholders,” added Ang. “We are very glad that motorists can soon enjoy faster trips to and from Southern Luzon.”

SMC also shared that the SLEX toll plazas have been equipped with automatic license plate-reading (ALPR) cameras. These cameras have allowed the barrierless entry points and seamless passage of motorists.

Those who pass SLEX frequently enough like we do probably know that the roadworks and partially widened lanes have created various chokepoints along SLEX, especially the southbound side during weekday rush hours and weekends. Here’s hoping that once the 6x6 lanes are fully passable, we won’t have to deal with the heavy traffic at these bottlenecks anymore.
