TomTom has revealed its latest traffic index, with Manila and Davao City both achieving lower positions in the overall global rankings. From 15th place in 2024, Manila is now ranked at 40, while Davao City moved from third to 12th.

However, despite these apparent improvements, the Philippines was still ranked as the most congested country in Asia, and the second-most in the entire world. Globally, it tied with Malta with a 45% congestion rate, and only fell behind Colombia’s 49%.

In Asia, the Philippines is followed by India and Singapore, both of which share a congestion rate of 37%. It should be noted that TomTom’s index does not include some of the biggest countries in the world. The more notable exclusions are China, Russia, and South Korea. Several countries in Africa were also not part of this year’s index.

However, that should not discount the mobility issues that continue to plague the country. While TomTom only ranks Manila and Davao, traffic jams are rampant throughout the Philippines, and the data tells us it’s only getting worse.

As compared to the 2024 index, congestion rates in Manila and Davao have increased by 0.8% and 1.6% points, respectively. This has led to drivers in Manila losing 143 hours—almost six full days—in traffic, and those in Davao losing 168 hours—equivalent to a week and 40 minutes.

Recently, the Department of Transportation has promised to expedite the completion of several crucial public transportation initiatives. These include the Davao Public Transport Modernization Project and the construction of various train systems in Metro Manila. Ideally, these projects should help cut down congestion and improve travel time for all road users.
