Five years after his last competitive motorsport race, Alessandro \"Alex\" Zanardi will be back behind the wheel for BMW Motorsport when he competes in the 2014 Blancpain GT Series in a Z4 GT3.

Zanardi lost both his legs in a horrific crash during the 2001 CART season. The accident didn\'t dampen his motorsport spirit as he returned in 2005 driving for the ROAL Motorsport team in the World Touring Car Championship series until his retirement in 2009, with a best-ever season finish in 10th place overall during his rookie year.

Fast-forward five years later and BMW Motorsport announces that Zanardi is indeed getting back in a BMW race car that will be run by the ROAL Motorsport team once more. And just like his time in the WTCC, the car will be specially modified to meet his requirements.

According to BMW, the 2014 Blancpain GT Series features both endurance and sprint races. Zanardi will reportedly drive one of the two ROAL Motorsport BMW Z4 GT3 cars in six of the seven sprint races, each lasting one hour.

\"Even after leaving the sport in 2009, I was still a racing driver at heart,\" Zanardi said. \"When I took to the track in the BMW M3 DTM at the end of 2012, I immediately got itchy fingers again. Ever since that moment, I have been toying with the idea of returning to motor racing. Together with BMW, we have looked at various options. I am even more pleased that it has worked out with my old friends at ROAL Motorsport. I would like to say a big thank you to BMW for this unique opportunity.\"
