Formula 1 drivers by the numbers

Confirmed F1 driver numbers, plus important pre-season dates

Among the new rules for the upcoming Formula 1 season is the requirement for each driver to choose a permanent number for the duration of his F1 career. Last month, the drivers thus submitted their picks from #2 to #99 (#1 is reserved for the reigning champion); in case two or more drivers nominated the same number as their first choice, priority would be given to the higher- or highest-placed driver in the 2013 standings.

The FIA recently released the initial list of confirmed driver numbers, listed in full below. Current titleholder Sebastian Vettel will have #1 on his Red Bull in 2014. Should he fail to win the title again, he will then use #5, which he\'d already run during part of his karting career and in his F1 maiden-championship season (2010).

As for the other active champions, Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton have opted for their childhood karting numbers of #14 and #44, respectively, while Jenson Button will use #22 from his F1 title-winning year (2009). Kimi Raikkonen has stated no particular reason for sticking with #7 from 2013; it\'s good enough for him, apparently, and that\'s that.

And yes, someone has chosen #13--that would be Pastor Maldonado, who won\'t be on track during the first pre-season test because Lotus has already confirmed it will be delaying its car launch. Also included below is a list of 2014 car launches and pre-season tests. Lotus has already confirmed it will not be participating in the first test.
