After conquering Pikes Peak Hill Climb in 2013 with Sebastien Loeb behind the wheel of a Peugeot 208 T16, the French carmaker is now setting its sights on Dakar Rally for 2015.
For the annual race, Peugeot will field the 2008 DKR. Driving for the team will be two-time World Rally Championship title winner and 2010 Dakar Rally champion Carlos Sainz and Dakar Rally’s five-time motorcycle champion Cyril Despres, who will be competing in the race for the first time on four wheels.
With Peugeot’s return to Dakar, the carmaker hopes to return to its halcyon days in the grueling annual off-road racing event, which it won for four straight years from 1987 to 1990, first with the 205 T16 and then with the 405 T16.
"Our Pikes Peak program was a success because we succeeded in bringing together an outstanding driver, a remarkable team and a car of the very highest quality," said Peugeot chief executive Maxime Picat. "We have set our sights high for the Dakar, too, and the team will once again be able to count on all the necessary talent and skills. Our intention is to have everything in place for next year's Dakar, even though our strategy is based on a longer term than was the case for the Pikes Peak Hill Climb, since we will be involved for several years. We are perfectly aware that the Dakar is a very difficult event, but our aim is nonetheless to win in our first attempt in 2015."
