The end of the Lancer Evolution?

It will be missed

Lancer Evolution X

If you're planning to buy a Lancer Evolution X, now might be a good time to do so as a senior executive from Mitsubishi has reportedly confirmed the current model will be the last of its kind.

Mitsubishi's global product director, Gayu Eusegi, said the current Lancer Evolution X remains appealing to motorists but production "must stop" due to a "policy change."

"Our influence now is EV technology,” Eusegi said in an Autocar.co.uk report.

This revelation falls in line with Mitsubishi Motors' president Osamu Masuko's statement in August 2010 that "the economic crisis transformed the demand structure for automobiles, one change being strong interest in eco-friendly vehicles due to rising global awareness of environmental issues."

Eusegi added that Mitsubishi customers would be able to identify themselves more closely with the company if it stopped manufacturing motorsport-inspired vehicles. Mitsubishi Motors officially withdrew from the World Rally Championship at the conclusion of the 2005 season, 13 years after the carmaker came out with the very first Lancer Evolution to compete in the 1993 staging of the series.
