TopGear.com.ph Philippine Car News - Williams, Renault revive legendary partnership for 2012 Formula 1 season

The most successful chassis-engine partnership in Formula 1 in the 1990s has been revived as Williams F1 has tapped Renault Sport F1 to provide for the outfit its championship-winning V8 engines for the 2012 and 2013 seasons.

"We are delighted and excited by our new partnership with Renault," said Frank Williams, team principal of Williams F1. "Our previous relationship with Renault was one of the most successful in Williams' history but we will not allow ourselves to dwell too much on the past. We must look to the future and continue to re-build our on-track reputation, which I am hopeful that today's announcement will help us to do."

The original alliance between Williams F1 and Renault was enormously successful from the 1989 to the 1997 season where it claimed four drivers' and five constructors' titles on top of achieving 63 race wins. It also produced some of the most evocative images of the series in the 1990s like when Alain Prost secured his fourth and final world title in the 1993 season and the classic duels between Damon Hill, Jacques Villeneuve and Michael Schumacher.

Renault Sport F1 president Bernard Rey said his company remains in Formula 1 as an engine supplier to achieve success in a cost-efficient way and that its partnership with Williams has great potential to add to the results the company has notched up over the recent years. Rey also pointed out that Williams has recently taken several important steps both commercially and technically to update its operations.

"We feel that this partnership is another important step in its rigorous plan. It reiterates how determined the team is to achieve results, which matches perfectly with our own objectives," Rey added. "Of course there's also a great pride in reviving the Williams-Renault name. Together, we produced racing cars that are recognized for their technical innovation and it is still Renault's most successful period in F1 to date. It's a hugely exciting opportunity for both Renault and Williams."
