I own a Generation 1 2000 GLX 1.8 Manual Tranny Toyota Revo (first owned from Toyota Otis). This ride has been my partner for the longest time and for the last nine years that I\'ve had it, it did not gave me any painstaking technical issue--not until this early year
What happened was, one of the EFI injectors was damaged perhaps due to it being nine years old. So being a guy who doesn\'t know much about technical car stuff, I went to a mechanic to ask for an opinion and was informed that it could be the idling servo kit. I went to Banawe, checked for the parts, bought one, installed it and still got the same problem (expense #1).
Now, the mechanic focused on the engine itself and found out that one of the EFI injector was the culprit. So went back to Banawe, bought the part needed, installed it and it worked (expense #2).
I\'m so happy it was fixed, but my concern now is that the idling on my odometer sometimes drops to a certain level that could kill the engine.
And yes, it could be the idling servo kit, but I already checked and cleaned it. What else could be the cause of this?
Second concern: I had my clutch disk, pressure plate, release bearing and pilot bearing replaced a couple of years ago and now every time I shift the gear on reverse, you can hear a cracking noise. A part was replaced somewhere in the clutch area (I\'m not sure what it is) and I\'m still getting the same problem.
The mechanic recommended replacing the clutch disk, pressure plate, release bearing and pilot bearing again. Is this the correct way of dealing with the problem?
Lastly, since I\'ve had this ride for nine years, I\'m planning to replace my shock absorber as well. I searched Internet to learn about the shocks we have
in the market. As far as I know, my Revo has fluid-type for the rear and front shocks. I\'m planning to change it to gas type. Would that be okay? Or perhaps try gas for the front and fluid for the rear?
Suggestions , opinion, and explanations will be highly appreciated.
At this point it\'s going to be difficult to identify the problem without having your vehicle right here in front of me, but I would check for vacuum leaks first. Then I would check if the servo kit was properly installed. I would also have the other three injectors checked, cleaned, calibrated to the same spec as the new injector or replace them entirely if they aren\'t up to specification.
It\'s possible that when your clutch was replaced the first time around it wasn\'t properly installed, so your mechanic may be on the right track. Another possible cause is worn gears on the reverse gear inside the transmission. This is caused by the bad habit of quickly shifting to reverse without the vehicle coming to a full stop yet. You may or may not be guilty of this but it is a possible cause. It\'s something that doesn\'t happen overnight and will only show up after several years. There is no fix for this save opening up the transmission and replacing the worn parts.
For your shocks I would either go with fluid shocks or gas charged shocks both front and rear and avoid doing the gas charged front, fluid rear altogether. It rarely produces a good result. If the original set served you well enough to last nine years without problems then there is no good reason not to use original shocks.
