Are you in the market for a new midsize pickup? Our latest edition of The Big Test might help you out. For the month of May, we pitted two trucks against each other: the Ford Ranger Wildtrak 4x4 and the Toyota Hilux GR Sport.
These are 4x4 variants, so we brought them to Driftwoods Action Park in Indang, Cavite, and tested their 0-60kph off-road acceleration, braking performance, ride and handling, hill ascent and descent, and bed space. The final consideration, of course, is value for money, and for reference, let’s put the prices here: The Ford costs P1,910,000, while the Toyota has an asking price of P2,057,000.
Big Test: Ford Ranger vs Toyota Hilux
The Hilux GR Sport or GR-S is currently the top-spec variant of the Hilux line. First launched locally in 2021, it boasts a ‘G-mesh’ grille design, a gloss-black sports bar, 18-inch blacked-out wheels, leather and soft-touch materials with red contrast stitching, and Gazoo Racing badges to differentiate it from lower-spec Hilux variants. Under the hood, it’s powered by a 2.8-liter turbodiesel engine that produces up to 201hp and 500Nm of torque.
The Ranger Wildtrak 4x4, is the latest generation of the T6-based Ranger released in 2022. Ithas a 2.0-liter bi-turbo diesel engine that delivers 210hp and 500Nm of torque. It's also packed with a host of advanced features including adaptive cruise control, lane-centering functions, auto high beam, autonomous emergency braking, and blind-spot detection with cross-traffic alert and braking.
