As you may have heard by now, Chinese brand Geely has been relaunched in the Philippines under the management of Sojitz G Auto Philippines Corporation. Its resurgence in the local market coincided with the arrival of its subcompact crossover: The Coolray.
Simply put, it’s a vehicle that—at least on paper—will be a very worthy competitor in its segment, especially with such an affordable price tag. Now if you want to learn more about this newcomer, you’ve come to the right place—here’s everything you need to know about the 2020 Geely Coolray.
Exterior
It’s hard to argue that this vehicle’s design is pleasing to the eye, deviating from what one would usually expect from a Chinese car. The ‘Expanding Cosmos Grille’ takes a shape similar to the Geely badge and flows toward the headlights. Completing the aggressive front fascia are the foglamp housings that complement the front bumper nicely.
Smooth lines and edges connect the front to the rear end, the latter featuring a chrome trim connecting the taillights. The rear design is pretty simple, but it does sport a neat spoiler up top. The vehicle stands at 4,330mm x 1,795mm x 1,609mm and sits on either 17 or 18-inch dual-color turbine-inspired sports rims. Ground clearance is listed at 196mm.
As far as colors go, the Coolray can be had in orange, vermillion, and white for the top-of-the-line variant, while the lower variants include additional blue and silver options. All colors come in a two-tone design with a black top for the two higher variants.
Interior
The cabin is where this SUV truly impresses, where an abundance of leather can be found. The dash is covered in red leather, while the black leather seats on the top-spec Coolray are stitched with the same red for contrast—you can get fabric or PVC seats for the lower variants. The side panels, armrests, and steering wheel have all been covered in soft-touch leather as well. The interior look is then accentuated with gray, silver, and black plastics.
In the middle of the cabin is a jet-throttle inspired e-shift with a quirky-looking handle placed between it and the passenger seat. Right in front of the shifter are the knobs to control the A/C. Speaking of A/C, the vents do sport a spaceship-like design, which is pretty neat, too.
Engine and specs
The Coolray packs a 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine that generates a maximum of 175hp and 255Nm and is mated to a seven-speed wet dual-clutch transmission. It’s a pretty powerful engine which can do 0-100kph in 7.9 seconds, and fuel consumption is decent, too, at a rated 15km/L. Fuel tank capacity is maxed out at 45 liters. This vehicle is compliant with Euro-5 standards as well.
Underneath, the suspension setup is composed of MacPherson struts and a torsion beam, while stopping power is handled by four disc brakes.
Extra features
Apart from the interior, the extra tech is what makes the Coolray even more impressive. For starters, it has a customizable seven-inch LCD instrument panel behind the tiller, and a 10.25-inch floating infotainment system integrated with Geely’s GKUI Smart Ecosystem is also available. Meanwhile, save for the base variant, a fully automatic parking feature is also included in the package. This is complemented by 360-degree panoramic view that can be seen through the massive head unit.
Other driver-assist and safety features include cruise control, hill descent control, and stability/traction controls. As a small nifty bonus, the Coolray is also equipped with an electronic parking brake with autohold feature.
The higher variants also come fitted with a panoramic sunroof and a smart keyless entry system. Meanwhile, a remote start feature and a push-start button are both available as standard.
