In case you missed the scorching heat happening just outside your window, summer is officially (or unofficially, depending on when you’re reading this) upon us. You all know the drill to stay safe during this season: wear appropriate clothing, stay in the shade as much as possible, drink lots of water, slap on suncreen, and so forth.

But it’s not just your own body that you need to take care of. Like the human form, a car can be a well-oiled (literally) machine provided you put in the time and effort to keep it in good working order. This is especially true during summer in the Philippines, when temperatures can reach upwards of 35 degrees Celcius on a bad day.

1) Park in the shade whenever possible

This is an obvious one, but it always bears repeating. If you have a choice between parking your car outside in the hot sun or inside a shaded parking lot, always opt for the cooler option. This might mean taking a few more steps on foot than you intended to, but the tradeoff for your car is well worth it. Besides, you’ll be thanking yourself once you do go back to your car and you get to enter into a cool cabin.

What happens if you don’t? Well, you risk the natural wear and tear that comes with leaving a car outside to the mercy of the sun. This includes seeing your car’s paint fade and patina, making it look far from factory fresh. You wouldn’t want that now, would you?

2) If you do have to park in the sun, use a sun shade

Sometimes, though, you’re left with no choice but to leave your precious ride out in the sun, even if it’s just for a few hours. In case you have to do this, it’d be worth your money to invest in a sun shade. Placing this along the inside of your car’s windshield can protect your cabin—and the things inside it including the dashboard, infotainment system, and those precious leather and plastic materials—from the harmful effects of UV rays.

3) Keep your car’s tire pressure in check

One of the things that are easily affected by weather changes is your tires. In the case of summer, the heat can cause your tires to expand and the air pressure within to rise. If your tires are overinflated, their contact surface with the ground is reduced, putting at you at risk for things like hydroplaning. This also results in your car’s comfort being compromised. Furthermore, like a balloon stretched to the brim, they become more susceptible to damage.

4) Clean your battery

Another part of your car that gets affected when the temperature rises is the battery. For one, the hot weather outside can cause heat to build up in your engine bay, thereby speeding up wear on everything contained within. Furthermore, the heat can accelerate the battery’s chemical processes, possibly leading to overcharging.

The best way to maintain your car’s battery is to check it regularly. Make sure it still holds a decent charge (you can buy tools easily for this), check that the terminals are still connected well, and clean them of any debris or buildup. In case you need a replacement, make sure you get the right kind and size for your car.

5) Make sure your A/C works and works well

What’s the best way to combat the heat’s effects on your body? By turning on your car’s air-conditioning and being grateful for the fact that you have such a luxury at your disposal. It would be worth your while, then, to always ensure it’s in tip-top shape. If you spot any leaks, smells, or notice your A/C isn’t reaching cooling temperatures like it used to, it’s best to take your car to a professional for a proper look.

So there you have it. With a bit of care and a little common sense, you can keep your car safe for the next few months. Got any more car care tips for the summer season? List them down below.
