Watch: Removing 195kg of excess weight from an E46 BMW 3-Series

Weight reduction is an essential step in building a race car

Building a track-ready race car out of a regular road car is a long and tedious process. But apart from the mechanical tweaks such as engine swaps as well as suspension and brake upgrades, there’s another seemingly simple yet very important aspect to focus on: weight reduction.

Our cars carry a lot of extra stuff such as seats, spare tires, and all those plastic trim that you won’t be needing for a track-only car. That’s a pretty obvious point to make, but what many people don’t know is just how heavy these excess materials are.

YouTuber ChrisFix recently got an all-wheel-drive E46 BMW 3-Series that he plans to turn into an endurance race car, and he shared the entire weight reduction process on his channel. With everything intact, the car weighed 3,370lb (1,529kg), and the goal was to then get it to under 3,000lb.

He was able to achieve that by taking out every removable part possible, including the sunroof. The OEM driver’s seat was also replaced by a more lightweight racing seat. All the unnecessary screws, clips, nuts, and bolts were detached, and surprisingly, those little things add up.

ChrisFix shared actual footage and measurements of his 0-97kph times as well as the braking distances before and after the lightweighting process. Just by gutting the inside of the Bimmer, the 6.8sec 0-97kph run was cut to just 5.97sec, which is quite a significant improvement.

Anyway, the most satisfying part of this video is the parts removal process itself. “It’s got to be so satisfying to put all that plastic out of this car knowing you don’t have to put it back in.
