It’s a good time to be a film buff and a gearhead. The live-action Hot Wheels movie has found its director, with Warner Bros. signing Jon M. Chu to helm the production.

Following the success of Barbie (directed by Greta Gerwig), Warner Bros. and Mattel are hoping to create another critical and commercial success with Hot Wheels next in the pipeline. There aren’t a lot of public details about the movie, but Warner Bros. has said it will be a “high-octane action film,” and will showcase “some of the world’s hottest and sleekest vehicles.”

To bring these aspirations to life, Chu was specifically tapped for his worldbuilding abilities, as said by Mattel Studios president and chief content officer, Robbie Brenner: “Jon’s ability to craft rich, elaborate worlds with a distinct point of view makes him the ideal storyteller to bring Hot Wheels to life. His films are visual spectacles—true eye candy—but what sets them apart is how he weaves unforgettable narratives within those stunning frames.”

Chu’s directing resume is full of colorful universes, having captained Wicked and its upcoming sequel, Wicked: For Good, set to premiere later this year.

He will be joined by screenwriters Juel Taylor and Tony Rettenmaier, who had previously penned They Cloned Tyrone, Space Jam 2: A New Legacy, and Creed II. Warner Bros. and Mattel have also tapped Star Wars and Star Trek director J.J. Abrams and his production company, Bad Robot, to help build the world of Hot Wheels on screen.

It looks like a strong production team, and the cast has yet to be announced. Release dates have also yet to be announced.
