Specs, prices, features: Everything you need to know about the new MG G50 Plus

MG Philippines has finally added a much needed model in the local lineup. Years after the brand landed in the country, it finally has a proper three-row MPV to take on the market.

That model is the MG G50 Plus. We say it’s about time the brand brought in an MPV, and it has the potential to be one of its best-sellers in the country. It’s aimed at those looking for a value packed MPV that’s larger than subcompact models.

Variants and prices

Locally, there are three variants available for the G50 Plus. It kicks off with the STD (Standard), followed by the COM (Comfort), and topped off by the LUX (Luxury). All three vary in terms of equipment levels, while the STD and COM share the same look from the outside. As for prices, it ranges from P1,048,888 to P1,288,888.

Exterior

If it looks familiar, that’s because this MPV was sold with a different badge in the past. The MG G50 Plus is the MPV formerly known as the Maxus G50, but with Maxus no longer active in the market, MG has swooped in to utilize it.

Now, it’s not just a badge job as MG did add unique styling details for its version of the G50. While most of the hard points remain, it does have a completely different bumper and grille design. The MG badge is more prominent, and there’s more chrome bits to be seen.

Wheel designs vary from variant to variant. The STD and COM ride on 16-inch alloys, while the LUX comes exclusively with 17-inch wheels. At the rear, there’s a chrome highlight for some contrast, while the garnish is finished in black. Smoked tail lights complete the look of the back end.

Moving to dimensions, the G50 is right in the middle of the midsize MPV class. It measures 4,825mm long, 1,825mm wide, and 1,778mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,800mm.

Inside, driver’s are greeted by a combination of a digital and analog instrument cluster. A free floating screen sits in the center of the dash top and houses the infotainment system. A high center console is present and gives the G50 a sizable storage bin underneath it.

Depending on the variant chosen, the G50 Plus has either fabric or leather trim. The STD and COM have fabric while the LUX gets upgraded to leather. The first two variants get a sliding bench for the second row, but move up to the LUX and it comes with a pair of captain’s chairs. Moving to the third row, it seats up to three and folds flat into the floor for an effective cargo area.

Of course, cupholders are abound in the G50 Plus, along with storage bins and plug-in ports for all three rows. Keep rear passengers cool is a ceiling-mounted air-conditioner. Lastly, the STD and COM come with a four-speaker sound system, while the LUX gets six.

Engine and specs

But regardless of which variant is selected, all G50 Plus models share just one engine. From base to top-spec, all are powered by a 1.5-liter turbo engine. That mill produces 179hp and 285Nm of torque across the range. The Standard uses a six-speed manual, whole the Comfort and Lux each get a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. 

For those curious, the G50 Plus needs 95 octane fuel due to its turbocharged engine. Fuel tank capacity is 60 liters.

Extra features

All but the base model come with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The upper two variants also come with a reverse camera but at least the base model already includes sensors. But what is standard is cruise control, and yes, the manual version has it too. A tire pressure monitoring system is also part of the package.

Dual-clutch models have an electronic parking brake, while the manual sticks with, er, a manual one. For the safety conscious, they’ll be relieved to know that stability control and hill start assist are standard.

For creature comforts, only the LUX has power seats at the front. It’s also the only variant with automatic climate control. If you want LED headlights, the top-spec is the only way to go.
