Personally, we think that the best car ads aren’t the ones with the biggest budgets or wittiest scripts—it’s the ones that really strike you in the feels when you least expect it.

This one by Mini fits the bill. It’s a simple montage of holiday driving scenes playing out to the tune of Chris Rea’s Driving Home for Christmas. If you’re in need of a little Christmas cheer to help cap off 2021, this might just do the trick. Watch:

No drifting, no A-list names, not even any dialogue—just a simple motoring-themed reminder of what the holiday season is all about.

Oh, and in case you didn’t know, this tune was actually written by Rea while riding inside an Austin Mini on a wintery night way back in 1978.

“We kept getting stuck in traffic and I’d look across at the other drivers, who all looked so miserable. Jokingly, I started singing:We’re driving home for Christmas,’” Rea said in a 2016 interview with The Guardian. “Then, whenever the street lights shone inside the car, I started writing down lyrics.”

“I had big companies using it in adverts, and it was in a video for Shelter. I used to be terrified the song would ruin any credibility I had left, but now we have a laugh with it. If I’m ever stuck on the M25—the Road to Hell—I’ll wind the window down and start singing, ‘I’m driving home for Christmas’ at people in cars alongside. They love it. It’s like giving them a present,” Rea added.
