In June 2024, Mitsubishi unveiled the teaser for future models bound for Australia. This sort of also serves as a teaser for Southeast Asia, or at least the pickup and PPV side of the range. The vehicle front and center of the recent teaser is an SUV hidden in the shadows showing its distinct T-shaped DRLs—this could be the next Montero Sport (a.k.a. the Pajero Sport).

The vehicle’s shape also matches the computer-generated cloth-draped SUV simply labeled as ‘PPV’ (pickup platform vehicle) in the Japanese carmaker’s March 2023 teaser. What you see here is our interpretation of Mitsubishi’s next PPV based on the information we gathered.

Let’s start with the shape. Mitsubishi seems to be ditching the current Montero Sport’s sleek curvy styling for a more traditional SUV look. The PPV teased features a boxier profile with a taller greenhouse and a more upright windshield. The A-pillars appear to have a seam at the top, suggesting it could be gloss black. Note that in the 2023 teaser image, the PPV appears to be noticeably taller than the 1,815mm tall Triton Athlete that it’s next to.

Up front, it features the Japanese brand’s new style slim T-shaped LED daytime running lights that extend inwards towards the Mitsubishi logo, this is reminiscent of the units we saw on the D:X Concept.

The older teaser hints at headlight units below DRLs. As for the hidden details, I just did a version of the Mitsubishi Dynamic Shield Design that would match the design language. Moving to the sides, the front-view teaser shot shows chunky wide wheel arches peeking from the sides with what appears to be plastic fender flare extensions which in my design are D:X Concept-inspired.

The rear end is a mystery, so I decided to use the D:X Concept as inspiration and gave it thin T-shaped taillights to match the front DRLs.

What could power it? My guess is that it will most likely share the same 4N16 diesel engines as the current Triton. Regarding electrification, I wouldn’t be surprised if a PHEV version joins the lineup.

The next-generation Montero Sport has its own look to further set it apart from the new Triton it’s based on. Will Mitsubishi’s upcoming PPV be positioned as a more affordable alternative to the new 250 Series Prado? If this is the case, Mitsubishi could have a potential hit here.

What do you think of our next-gen Montero Sport? Would you consider it if the production model looked like this? Let us know in the comments.
