The all-new Mitsubishi Montero Sport is one of the most anticipated cars of the year. Photos and teasers online have done their part in making everyone look forward to seeing it in the metal. And it definitely blows you away. Apart from the exterior design, other major talking points are the new 4N15 2.4-liter turbodiesel with MIVEC technology, and the new eight-speed automatic transmission.

Earlier this month, we drove the SUV in the Queen City of the South. Since I come from Cebu, I had a good idea of what the drive would be like and what to expect. One thing nice about this place is that a half-hour drive can take you either to the beach or to the mountains. And whatever you choose, coastal roads are almost always part of the journey. In this case, it’s a 120km drive to Kandaya Resort in Daan Bantayan, a town at the northern tip famous for its beaches.

And since we were in Cebu, we did as the locals did--enjoy grilled food with a beer in hand by the beach. It was a welcome break from the hustle and bustle of Metro Manila.

So, just how good is the new Montero Sport? And how does it perform against its closest rivals, the Ford Everest and the Toyota Fortuner? Wait for our April issue to find out.

In the meantime, watch the video.
