KTM’s quest for supernaked domination goes a step further with the announcement of the 2021 1290 Super Duke RR. Based on the already bonkers 1290 Super Duke R, the RR version is even sharper,lighter, and angrier, making it the closest thing to a new superbike from the Austrian manufacturer.
The RR’s designers had free reign to spec it out as the supernaked bike of their dreams. Thanks to the 1,301cc LC8 V-twin engine with 180hp and 140Nm of torque and an extensive amount of weight savings, the bike is 9kg lighter overall than the standard R, blessing the RR with a coveted 1:1 power-to-weight ratio.
An all-new race-derived quick-turn throttle twist grip provides a seven-degree reduction in twist action compared to the R, promising better response as well as reducing rider wrist angle and elbow drop when at full throttle. Suspension duties are taken care of by a WP Apex Pro 7548 Closed Cartridge fork up front and a WP Apex Pro 7746 shock bringing up the rear. The brakes are top-shelf Brembo Stylema four-piston calipers in front with a two-piston caliper in the rear. The 1290 Super Duke RR is also adorned with new seven-spoke lightweight forged wheels shod in Michelin Power Cup 2 tires designed for 90% track use, just to drive home how track-ready this bike is.
Further improvements include a sharp all-new carbon subframe that weighs a measly 850 grams, a WP Apex Pro 7117 steering damper identical to those used by WP racing teams, adjustable brake and clutch levers with a front brake lever guard, an all-new single seat 10mm higher than on the Super Duke R, adjustable foot pegs, and a whole suite of KTM electronics complete with Track and Performance modes.
