BMW Motorrad bikes will soon be offered with active cruise control

Should more bike manufacturers adopt the tech, too?

Active cruise control (ACC) isn’t new—car companies have long been using the tech to make drives on the highway more comfortable, convenient, and, of course, safer. For motorcycles, though? The feature isn’t as common. BMW Motorrad is looking to change this.

The German motorcycle brand has announced that it will be introducing its own ACC rider assistance system in its products. The feature has been developed with Bosch, and will allow motorbikes to automatically regulate their set speed depending on its distance to the car in front of it. The feature will also automatically reduce a bike’s speed during cornering if necessary, though it will interfere to a lesser extent to avoid disrupting the rider.

BMW Motorrad says that ACC information will be displayed on a motorcycle’s TFT instrument cluster. The feature will come with two settings, Comfortable or Dynamic, and switching to the latter will disable the ACC’s distance control.

It’s important to note, though, that BMW Motorrad’s ACC only detects moving cars. Faced with a stationary obstacle, the rider will need to do the braking himself.

No word on exactly when BMW Motorrad’s ACC will arrive or which models will get it first, but the company says it will be offered “soon.” Is this a feature you can see yourself using often?
