The Yamaha faithful have been waiting a while for a new (and proper) sport bike from the Japanese motorcycle brand for a few years now following the discontinuation of the famed R6. Well, here you have it, folks—the all-new Yamaha YZF-R9.
The Yamaha R9 inherits the brand’s racing R&D and adopts technology derived from both existing road-going vehicles and its MotoGP program. At least in terms of design, it’s a proper successor to its legendary predecessors, boasting aggressive styling that just screams speed.
Everything is aerodynamic, from the windshield to the fairings and including the winglets up front. The bike itself is also insanely light, weighing just 195kg when wet. Not too shabby, considering the animal it packs underneath.

Said animal is an 890cc liquid-cooled three-cylinder CP3 engine that in other models like the MT-09 SP produces 117hp at 10,000rpm and 93Nm of torque at 7,000rpm. Yamaha hasn’t shared exact figures for the engine in the R9, but the supersport bike supposedly gets a unique ECU tune and optimized gear ratio, so it should perform better than the standard engine.
Yamaha also claims the R9 has a nearly perfect 50-50 weight distribution front and rear, so it should handle like a dream. It also has a fully adjustable KYB front fork with an industry-first rear shock with a new low-speed valve, and a Brembo Stylema brake caliper.

In the electronics department, the R9 doesn’t get left behind. It comes standard with a five-inch full-color TFT display with smartphone connectivity. Of course, the bike also gets creature comforts including ABS with lean-sensitive brake control and nine-level lean-sensitive traction control.
As far as colors go, the R9 can be had in Team Yamaha Blue, Matt Black or Intensity White/Redline.
Anyway, that’s about all we have for now—there’s quite a lot to digest. But what do you guys think? Should Yamaha Motor Philippines bring this powerful rocket of a bike to our market?
