Local tennis fans have something to look forward to next week as Mitsubishi Motors Philippines is set to stage the 22nd Mitsubishi Lancer International Junior Tennis Championship (MLIJTC).
Recognized as one of the biggest juniors' tournaments in Asia and the longest running tennis tournament in the Philippines, the MLIJTC gathers the best young stars in tennis today like Jeson Patrombon, who is currently ranked as the world's number nine junior tennis player--the highest rank reached by a Filipino netter since Felix Barrientos broke into the top four in the 1980s. Also expected to see action at the tournament are Slovakia's Filip Horansky, Australia's Andrew Whittington, The Netherlands' Indy De Vroome, South Korea's So-Ra Lee, Japan's Eri Hozumi. Competitors from over 30 countries are expected to arrive.
To make this year's tournament more productive, a free tennis clinic will be conducted by national coaches Chris Cuarto, Roland Kraut and Karl Sta. Ana for tennis players 18 years old and below. Interested participants may register at the Rizal Memorial Stadium on March 26 at 7am. The clinic will be held on March 26 and 27. As a bonus, Mitsubishi Motors Philippines will give a Ralliart backpack to the first 20 registrants.
The 22nd Mitsubishi Lancer International Junior Tennis Championship, in partnership with the International Tennis Federation and the Philippine Tennis Association, will be held from March 22 to 27 at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center - Rizal Memorial Stadium in Malate, Manila. Admission is free.
