The first two 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8s for the European market have been delivered to the continent and the owners are Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa.
Delivered by Beth Paretta, marketing and operations director of the Chrysler's group's Street and Racing Technology (SRT) brand and motorsports, the two Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8s were custom-built for the Ferrari drivers and features exclusive Rosso Corsa colored exteriors, red leather interiors and additional Ferrari looks as a "tribute to the two Ferrari 'ambassadors'."
Prepared by the Chrysler group's SRT design and engineering teams, the vehicle retains the iconic, seven-slot Jeep front grille that’s been painted in matte black and features custom red inserts. A race-inspired, offset black driver's stripe with a white accent customizes the front and rear bumpers, hood, the entire surface of the roof and the rear spoiler. Additional exclusive details are the matte black painted dual-pane sunroof, carbon fiber mirror caps and a gloss black rear light bar with red accents on the Jeep logo. Complete the unique exterior trim is the Italian flag that's been painted on the underside of the rear spoiler as homage to Ferrari's 2011 Formula 1 car, the Ferrari F150º. Complementing the aggressive look with an equally aggressive stance is the ride height that’s been lowered by 1.5 inches and the forged aluminum, black painted 20-inch wheels.
Inside, the Grand Cherokee SRT8s have been fitted with Ferrari Red leather inserts on the seats that feature sculpted bolsters. The red leather treatment has also been given to the door trim panels, the central armrest and the instrument panel while the leather-wrapped SRT8 steering wheel has been given red contrasting stitching. Giving this SUV’s cabin the feel of Ferrari’s GT cars is the unique instrument cluster with its yellow dials.
Powering the custom Grand Cherokee SRT8 is the same 6.4-liter Hemi V8 engine that puts out 470hp and 630Nm of torque as the standard Grand Cherokee SRT8 though it's now equipped with Chrysler's Fuel Saver technology that turns off four of the eight cylinders when full power is not required to improve the vehicle's fuel economy. With that much prodigious power under the hood, this SRT8 model has a top speed of 257kph, can sprint from zero to over 97kph in 4.8 seconds and go from zero to 161kph and then back to zero again in the mid-16 second range.
"We're excited and proud to be able to share 'Ferrari-style' custom-built versions of the most powerful and best handling Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 ever with two of the most talented drivers in the world," said Paretta. "We know that both Fernando and Felipe will feel right at home in our ultimate performance SUVs that are identically built with classic Ferrari styling cues and one-of-a-kind Rosso Corsa exteriors. The Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 brings a combination of Jeep's world-class capability to the road or the race track along with unparalleled luxury and refinement and advanced innovative technologies for all driving enthusiasts."
The Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 is due to go on sale in Europe in May 2012.
