Just a few months ago, Audi unveiled its all-new A5 and S5 coupe. These vehicles introduced us to the company's latest evolutionary design for its popular coupe range. Knowing that the Sportback model would carry the same general styling as its two-door sibling, it left us wondering if the new look would translate well to a five-door fastback body. Now, the German carmaker has finally revealed the all-new A5 and S5 Sportback, and they look much better than we could have imagined.
Like the coupe, the Sportback features the more angular and wide single-frame grille. On the sides are the trademark flowing curved front fenders, beltline, and rear haunches that are now accentuated by curved creases. There’s also a sleeker roofline that compliments the more expressive design language of the new A5 range.
Inside, the same styling enhancements given to the A4 and A5 coupe are present. This means a classier interior with better materials and a lot of tech goodies, like the available reconfigurable 12.3-inch TFT display and the 8.3-inch multimedia interface (MMI) navigation plus with MMI touch. Optional ambient lighting is also available, with 30 different colors to choose from.
Another important interior upgrade is the increased passenger space. The interior length has been increased by 17mm, front shoulder room is up by 11mm, while rear knee room has been improved by 24mm. Audi also claims its 480-liter cargo capacity as among the best in its class.
Handling and ride comfort have been improved thanks to a redesigned five-link front suspension and a new five-link rear suspension. In addition, wider tracks and a longer wheelbase give the car a more planted stance. The use of lightweight materials has helped reduce the overall body weight by up to 85kg.
Being a sporty German machine, it’s what’s under the hood that really matters. The A5 Sportback is available with two gasoline mills, a 190hp 2.0 TFSI, and a 252hp 2.0 TFSI; and three oil-burners, a 190hp 2.0 TDI, a 218hp 3.0 TDI, and a 286hp 3.0 TDI. The high-performance S5 Sportback is available with a 354hp 3.0 TFSI V6 turbo engine.
The engines can be mated to a six-speed manual transmission, seven-speed S Tronic dual-clutch transmission, or eight-speed Tiptronic. Quattro AWD is standard on the S5 and the range-topping diesel variant, and an option on lower variants.
The new A5 and S5 Sportback will hit European showrooms in early 2017. Hopefully, it reaches our shores soon after.
