Right on schedule, the all-new MG HS has made its world premiere. Making its debut at the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed, it presents a new, more radical direction for MG’s compact crossover.

Boasting a bigger body and a major overhaul inside and out, the redesigned HS is MG’s more serious attempt at the compact crossover market. The main targets? That would be the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V.

In terms of dimensions, the 2025 HS now measures 4,635mm long, 1,890mm wide, and has a wheelbase of 2,750mm. That makes it 26mm longer, 14mm wider, and gains an extra 30mm in its wheelbase. That should give it a little bit more room inside.

Moving to design, the initial patent photos were right on the money. While it shares the same hard points as the Roewe RX5, the MG sports a sleeker and sharper front end. Cue the upswept headlights, bold grille, and the prominent MG badged housed in a sizable grille.

The flanks of the 2025 MG HS sees smoothened out character lines, along with pronounced shoulders to make it look wider. No concept car-like flush door handles here. It’s a conventional set of pull-type handles here. As for the rear, we see full-width tail lights with a distinct pattern, along with a rakish tailgate with a wide opening.

Inside, occupants are greeted by a wide screen panel that houses two displays. The first is a fully digital and customizable instrument cluster, while the second is MG’s latest infotainment system. Both of these measure a sizable 12.3 inches each. In case you’re curious, the cargo capacity is at 507 liters and can be expanded to 1,484 liters with the seats folded down. This is still a family crossover we’re talking about, after all.

We can’t talk family car without mentioning safety features. Six airbags are standard from the get go, along with hill start assist and stability control. Seatbelt reminders at the back make sure everyone is buckled up.

But more importantly, the HS comes with MG Pilot, MG’s advanced driver assist system. It includes autonomous emergency braking, lane keep assist with lane departure warning, and adaptive cruise control, to name a few. The main highlight of MG Pilot is the traffic jam assist and the intelligent speed limit assist that’s integrated in the adaptive cruise.

Two powertrain options are available for the all-new MG HS. The first is a new-generation 1.5-liter turbo engine that makes 168hp and 275Nm of torque. We’re surprised that MG still added a six-speed manual option for it, although a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission is also available.

The second powertrain choice is a plug-in hybrid system. It pairs a 1.5-liter engine that puts out 140hp to a 154kw (or 207hp) electric motor. Combined outputs weren’t given, but MG says it’s good enough to give this crossover SUV a 0 to 100kph time of 6.8 seconds. Its 24.7kWh battery and 67kW generator is said to deliver an electric-only driving range of up to 120 kilometers.
