Subaru has revealed the all-new Legacy sedan, calling it the roomiest ever with the largest passenger cabin in the midsize segment.

According to the Japanese carmaker, the all-new model echoes the design theme first seen in the Legacy Concept that debuted at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show. Calling it a combination of "sporty form and efficient function," the vehicle's coupe-like profile starts with its front fascia that combines the grille and the bumper into a singular piece. Complementing the Legacy's athletic stance is the steeply raked front windshield, which, according to Subaru, has been pulled forward by two inches at the base. Together with the higher seating hip points, new front partition windows and door-mounted side mirrors, visibility around the car has supposedly been improved.

An aluminum hood not only serves as a weight-saving effort but also enhances the car's steering response, while an active grille shutter system helps to further improve fuel economy by reducing wind resistance at speed when it is closed.

Despite having the same exterior footprint as the model it is replacing, the all-new Legacy has a roomier passenger cabin, giving its occupants more shoulder, hip, elbow and leg rooms. It's even worth noting that its trunk has been enlarged, which is no small feat since it requires packaging the vehicle's symmetrical AWD system, multilink rear suspension, rear differential and drive axles. The Legacy also comes with active torque vectoring, which is also found in the WRX and the WRX STI; this lets the car brake the inside front wheel "to facilitate more neutral cornering."

The all-new Legacy will be available with either a 2.5-liter flat-four engine that produces 175hp and 236Nm, or a 3.6-liter flat-six that puts out 256hp and 335Nm. Both engines will also be paired with Subaru's Lineartronic continuously variable transmission, with the six-cylinder model using a high-torque version. No mention was made of a future turbocharged model to replace the current generation's GT model.

The all-new Subaru Legacy will go on sale later this year.
