BMW has announced a new version of its Z4 roadster, and it is thus: meet the new ‘Handschalter’. Literally, a Z4 with a ‘manual switch’.
A small word that marks a big, um, shift, because it marries the most powerful version of BMW’s Z4 – the M40i – with a proper manual gearbox. So in 2024, you’ll be able to order a two-seater, six-cylinder open-top BMW with a six-speeder.

It’s BMW’s familiar turbo 3.0-liter six-pot, able to churn out 335hp and 500Nm of torque, here allied to a custom made ‘box modified for this specific application. We’re told it gets M-specific components for the gear set and shafts to handle each and every one of those horsies, to help create what BMW says is an “emotional bond” betwixt driver and car.
Not too shabby, either. BMW claims the six-speed M40i will go from 0-100kph in 4.6s… which is only one entire tenth slower than the eight-speed automatic M40i (4.5s). Top speed remains pegged at 250kph.
The Z4 M40i’s adaptive dampers have also been subject to a small tweak, while the Handschalter also gets bespoke auxiliary springs all round, a new reinforced anti-roll bar clamp at the front, and new mapping for the variable sport steering, traction control and M Sport diff. In short: it pointy.
And green. The Handschalter is treated to an exclusive ‘Frozen Dep Green’ body finish, along with new alloys, small exterior flourishes and ‘cognac’ leather inside.
“The pairing of a straight-six engine with a six-speed manual gearbox means the new BMW Z4 M40i represents a unique proposition in this segment,” said BMW, “and also a highly exclusive setup within the BMW product portfolio”.
Indeed, the only other high-performance BMWs you can currently spec with a manual gearbox – before it’s binned altogether – are the M2, M3 and M4. So, get ‘em while you can.
