The plug-in hybrid BYD Dolphin G DM-i has officially debuted, and the European market is getting first dibs. It comes with BYD’s familiar DM-i powertrain, built around a 1.5-liter gasoline-powered generator and an 18.3kWh battery.
That gives it an estimated driving range of 1,040km, with 105km on pure electric power. BYD also used this release to redesign the Dolphin, giving it a sportier face and a more modern cabin. Size-wise, it is slightly longer and wider, which is likely due to its new gasoline engine.
At the same time, this new Dolphin keeps its hatchback practicality, with up to 1,225 liters of rear cargo space. It is also still Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capable, and can accommodate high-speed DC charging.

Inside, BYD added heating functions to the front seats, while the driver gets a heads-up display. While the full DiPilot suite of advanced driving aids is not on board, there are still several welcome additions. These include automatic emergency braking, lane-departure and lane-keeping, blind-spot detection, and crossing traffic alerts.
The Chinese carmaker also overhauled the ambient lighting system with a new 31-color setup. The onboard infotainment software has also been updated to natively support Google Maps, Google Assistant, and the Google Play Store. These are still channeled through a 12.8-inch screen. Below the display, the center console has been updated with a 15W wireless charging pad.
In terms of power, the plug-in hybrid Dolphin is rated for 209hp and 210Nm of torque. These make it considerably more powerful than its fully electric counterpart, which makes 94hp and 180Nm.
It is still unclear if the new Dolphin will make its way to markets outside of Europe. If BYD Cars Philippines elected to bring this in, would you take it over the fully electric version?
