Ten years after Ford ceased producing and selling its GT supercar, the American automaker has revealed that it is once again bringing back the nameplate as an all-new supercar.

While the previous-generation GT was a modern, albeit bigger, interpretation of the classic Ford GT40 race car of the 1960s, the all-new GT serves as a "technology showcase for top EcoBoost performance, aerodynamics and lightweight carbon-fiber construction."

According to Ford, the all-new GT has a 3.5-liter, twin-turbo, mid-mounted V6 EcoBoost engine, which is reportedly "the most powerful EcoBoost production engine ever" with more than 600hp. Paired with this is a seven-speed dual-clutch transaxle that allows for near-instantaneous gear changes.

The GT also makes extensive use of lightweight materials like carbon fiber and aluminum, supposedly giving it one of the best power-to-weight ratios of any production car. Ford's use of these lightweight materials is highlighted by the carbon-fiber passenger cell and the aluminum front and rear subframes encapsulated in structural carbon-fiber body panels.

Although each surface on the GT is functionally crafted to manage airflow, it reportedly also features fully active aerodynamic components to improve braking, handling and stability. In addition, an active rear spoiler reactively deploys and adjusts its height and/or pitch angle depending on conditions.

Access to the GT’s cockpit is through a pair of upward-swinging doors. The driver and the passenger then settle into seats that are integrated directly into the carbon-fiber passenger cell. Adjustable pedals and steering column accommodate drivers of different sizes. An F1-style steering wheel with all the necessary integrated driver controls allowed for the creation of a stalkless steering column that easily gives access to the transmission’s paddle-shift controls. A fully digital and configurable instrument cluster provides a wealth of driver-focused data, with a display that’s configurable for multiple driving environments and different driving modes.

"The GT is the ultimate execution of an enthusiast supercar," said Ford group vice president for global product development Raj Nair. "The GT includes innovations and technologies that can be applied broadly across Ford’s future product portfolio--another proof point that Ford continues raising the performance bar while ultimately improving vehicles for all of our customers."

The all-new Ford GT will begin production in late 2016, and will go on sale "in select global markets to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Ford GT race cars placing 1-2-3 at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans."
