How safe is the Geely Emgrand? ASEAN NCAP puts it to the test

For those in the market for a Geely Emgrand, it’s probably worth asking just how safe these cars are. After all, it’s lives that a car carries when it goes from point A to B. A car must protect its occupants in an event of an accident, as well as help them prevent it in the first place.

So, just how safe is Emgrand? Well, the folks from the ASEAN New Car Assessment Program (ASEAN NCAP) have the answer. The model they tested is the Proton version of the car, the recently launched S70.

In terms of frontal impact adult occupant protection, the Geely Emgrand/Proton S70 fared rather well. It received a rating of Good in terms of head and neck protection, as well as thigh and foot protection for both front occupants.

It’s not a totally perfect score though, as driver and passenger shin protection were rated marginal and adequate, respectively. It does make up for it by having near-perfect scores in the side impact test. An overall good performance, says ASEAN NCAP.

For child occupant protection, the Emgrand/S70 also performed well. It scored a perfect rating in front and side impact testing, a feat only a few cars within its class can achieve. A few points were knocked for ease of installing child seats, but again, a solid performance.

Moving on to active safety assists, the sedan’s standard stability control helped give it top marks in the ‘Evasive Braking and Avoidance’ test. The S70 is equipped with advanced driver assist systems (ADAS), but is currently unavailable in the Philippine-spec Geely Emgrand. In that aspect, the car was rated as average for its autonomous emergency braking system.

With the points all tallied, the Emgrand/S70 had an average weighted score of 82.95 percent. That’s enough to give this sedan the maximum five star rating. Compared to its popular rivals, it slots in between the new generation Toyota Vios (78.70) and Honda City (86.54).
