To say that the reactions the Honda Prelude got when it debuted were a mixed bag would be an understatement. Honda’s all-new sports coupe felt almost polarizing, frankly.
In the eyes of some, it looked good. Others said it looked a bit like another car from another brand. There were fans excited about the fact that it would be getting a new transmission, while purists scoffed at the idea of the coupe not having a manual gearbox available at all. Some, of course, complained about how expensive the Prelude was. In any case, we suppose none of it matters now, because a lot of people are apparently quite eager to buy it. A lot of people.

According to a report by Motor1.com, Honda has received eight times more orders than it had expected to sell each month. Honda thought it could sell the car to 300 people each month in its home market of Japan, but between September 5 and October 6 alone, a total of 2,400 orders were placed. That’s quite crazy.

The interesting part here is the demographics of the buyers. According to Honda, a good chunk of the orders were from people in their 50s and 60s who were looking for either a first or a second car. Unsurprisingly, white was the most popular color, accounting for more than half of the orders.
Honda has already confirmed the Prelude will eventually be sold in other markets, but it’s still unknown whether or not it’ll arrive in the Philippines. We don’t know yet, but what we’re sure of is that if it does, we’ll be one of the first lining up to have a go behind the wheel.
