How small do you want your Kia SUV? At the moment, the Sonet is the smallest you can go. But if that pint-sized model is still a tad too large for your liking, the South Korean automaker has just unveiled an even smaller option.
Meet the Kia Syros, and it’s the smallest crossover SUV that the company has to offer. It just made its world premiere in India, and it serves as the entry-level model to the Kia SUV family.

Does your car have a ‘kikay’ kit? Well, it probably should, and here’s what you’ll need

In terms of size, the Syros measures just 3,995mm long, 1,800mm wide, 1,665mm tall with a relatively long wheelbase of 2,550mm. While shorter than the Sonet in terms of length, the Syros is much taller than its stablemate by a significant 55mm. Also, the car you’re seeing here isn’t a concept, it’s the actual production version.
The front end is distinct, to say the least, with its ‘unibrow’ by the seam between the hood and the bumper. It comes with Tasman-inspired headlights too with these being mounted on the far corners of the front. Chunky body cladding is present, and the boxy theme is carried all over the body. At the back, there’s high-mounted L-shaped tail lights with a near-vertical tailgate to maximize interior space.

Speaking of the interior, Kia claims to offer one of the largest volumes in its class. The tall roof and wide cabin back that up, along with its sliding second-row seats. One wouldn’t think it’s an entry-level model thanks to the dual 12.3-inch displays on the dashboard. An electromechanical gear selector is present to save space, and there’s a fair mix of touchscreen and physical controls inside. Lastly, the steering wheel is of the two-spoke variety that’s a nod to classic Kia models.
For equipment, the Syros is available with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with wireless charging and over-the-air updates. Higher trim levels benefit from a panoramic sunroof, an eight-speaker sound system care of Harman Kardon, ventilated seats for the front and rear, and even an advanced driver assist system.

Two engine options will be offered in the Kia Syros lineup. The first choice is a 1.0-liter, three-cylinder turbo that makes 120hp and 172Nm. The other one is a 1.5-liter turbodiesel with 116hp and 250Nm. Both come standard with a six-speed manual but the 1.0-liter can be specified with a seven-speed dual clutch transmission while the diesel can be mated to a six-speed automatic.
