At the 2025 International Motor Show Germany—also known as IAA Mobility—in Munich, Mercedes-Benz almost casually shared new developments on the ‘Baby G,’ or the smaller G-Class.
We haven’t heard too much about the mini G-Wagen since it was formally announced in Munich back in 2023. However, a report from Autocar shared that Baby G prototypes may soon be seen on the road, as confirmed by Mercedes-Benz chairman Ola Kallenius at IAA Mobility 2025.

Chief technology officer Markus Schafer then stated that an all-new platform is in the works, just for the Baby G. “The G is a very special, authentic car, and the Mini G has to be authentic. So I cannot take just a platform, I cannot take an existing platform, I have to create my own. It’s a completely new development,” said Shafer.

He then went on to describe the platform as a miniature ladder-frame chassis that includes many unique parts and components. However, when asked about powertrain options, Shafer held his tongue.

With the Silver Arrows’ aggressive attitude to powertrain diversity, the upcoming Baby G could debut with gas-powered, hybrid, and fully electric variants. Mercedes-Benz is expected to launch at least 19 new vehicles in 2026 and around seven more in 2027, featuring a mix of combustion and electric powertrains across the lineup.
None of Merc’s executives offered up any potential release dates for the Baby G, but previous reports mention a 2026 release. Perhaps this, along with the G-Class Cabriolet, could be one of the 19 new Mercs next year?
