The all-new Mercedes-Benz G-Class may soon enter the Philippine market. Announced and debuted last March 2024, the updated G-Class features three powertrains that aim to redefine performance off-roading. The series starts with the Mercedes-Benz G450d, a mild-hybrid powertrain built around a six-cylinder diesel. The beefier G550 eventually led to the badder G63 AMG.

The all-electric Mercedes-Benz G580 also took the stage around that time, but it seems like it made more headlines as the newest Popemobile.

Recently, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) published the homologation papers for the ‘entry-level’ G450d. That particular variant will most likely replace the presently available G400d in our local lineup.

These G-Class SUVs don’t look particularly different from the previous generation. A closer look will reveal changes to the bumper and grille design that should make for better aerodynamics and temperature regulation. The stark changes lie in the overhauled cabin and its updated driving technology.

As mentioned, the G450d that may be on its way to the Philippines will pack a 3.0-liter turbodiesel six-cylinder engine with support from a 48V battery. That makes a mild-hybrid powertrain that produces 382hp and 950Nm of torque. With all cylinders pushing, the new G-Wagen should make the 0-100kph sprint in about 5.8sec—as compared to its predecessor’s 6.4sec.

The diesel G-Class has remained relatively quiet since March 2024. Merc and the surrounding press coverage prefer to show off the more powerful G550, G63, and G580 EV. However, the G450d presents an interesting case for more practical car buyers. Aside from the electric G580, it may be the most fuel-efficient G-Class while being the cheapest one in the lineup.

But then again, if you’re shopping for a G-Class, are you really concerned about those things?
