Well, that was a shock. Literally and figuratively.

MG Philippines pulled the wraps off one of the biggest surprise previews of the year. That’s because the company has previewed its first-ever electric roadster, the MG Cyberster. Yep, we’re just as surprised as you are.

This isn’t a concept car, either. What you’re seeing here is the actual production version of the MG Cyberster. With that, it continues MG’s long line of roadsters, stemming back from the ’20s. Of course, this time around, it’s a pure electric open-top sports car.

The Cyberster is MG’s first roadster since the TF and its first-ever electric sports car. Oh, and MG Philippines didn’t just bring it here for display. The company has confirmed that it will be available to customers by the first quarter of 2024. Not the most exact launch date, but at least we know it’s coming sooner rather than later given that 2024 is just around the corner.

It is unknown which specific Cyberster will be offered in the country. Globally, there are two variants on offer, namely, a single-motor variant and a dual-motor version. The former version makes 313hp, although torque figures are yet to be released. As for the dual-motor Cyberster, it gains all-wheel drive and a combined power output of 536hp and 725Nm of torque.

Performance claims for the dual-motor Cyberster can bait some a lot of sports cars out there. Thanks to all that grunt and grip, MG claims this roadster can do the 0 to 100kph sprint in just 3.2 seconds.

Those numbers aside, the MG Cyberster sounds promising to drive, too. That’s because it was developed with the help of Marco Fianello, the former chassis engineer of Scuderia Ferrari. With that, the company says the Cyberster has a strong and rigid chassis that gives it a high level of driving dynamics. In true classic roadster form, it comes with a traditional soft top instead of a heavy (and complex) metal folding roof mechanism.

Prices? That’s still yet to be determined. But should it be below P3 million, then it might just be one of the biggest performance bargains of the year.
