MG Philippines is presenting an early Christmas gift this year with a preview of a new subcompact crossover. Dubbed the MG One, this model will be formally launched by 2024. With that, MG Philippines expands its crossover portfolio. The One joins the ZS, ZS Turbo, and HS in the Philippine crossover lineup.

From the outside, it takes cues from several new MG models, namely the GT and the Chinese market MG6. Deep character lines and acute angles are featured throughout the body, and the low-slung roof gives a coupe-crossover vibe. As for the rear, a pair of slim tail lights blind in well with its wide tailgate.
While classified as a subcompact, the MG One is one (pun not intended) of the larger ones in its class. It measures 4,579mm long, 1,866mm wide, 1,617mm tall, and has a wheelbase of 2,670mm. The One is also the first MG model to introduce the new Sigma modular architecture that’s bound to be used in other models.

Inside, the One greets its occupants with a triple screen arrangement. The first panel handles audio auxiliaries, while the second serves as the instrument cluster. The largest screen then takes care of all infotainment and vehicle functions. Minimalism seems to be the theme here as there’s not much in the way of buttons inside. An electromechanical gear selector and electronic parking brake frees up more space at the front.
It’s unknown what variants we’ll be getting here, but it could be based on what’s available in China and the Middle East. Over there, the trim levels are Alpha and Beta. Depending on the spec, some models come with a two-tone interior, panoramic sunroof, and a variety of advanced driver assist systems.

Based on foreign specifications, the One uses a 1.5-liter turbo engine. It produces 181hp and 285Nm of torque, shifting via a continuously variable transmission.
Competitors, you ask? We’re looking at the likes of the Geely Coolray, Chery Tiggo 5X, Hyundai Creta, and entry-level versions of the Honda HR-V and Toyota Yaris Cross. Tough competition ahead. Let’s see how it fares once it’s available for testing.
