Just over a year after Mini launched the third-generation model of its iconic three-door hatchback, the British carmaker has finally introduced the production John Cooper Works version.

First seen as the John Cooper Works Concept at the Detroit Auto Show in January, the production model "combines an authentic race feeling with the premium characteristics and extended product substance of the latest Mini generation--distinctive, tradition-steeped...with performance qualities that are exceptional within the competitive environment."

The John Cooper Works model has a distinct front apron, with large cooling air inlets located in the space allocated for the fog lamps on the standard model. Completing the aerodynamic design of the body are the side sills and the rear apron and spoiler. The JCW Mini also gets a sports exhaust system, while the John Cooper Works branding can be found on the grille, the side scuttles and the tailgate.

Inside, the JCW model comes with branded sport seats, entry sills, gear selector, and steering wheel with multifunction buttons and paddle shifts. In addition, the pedals and the driver footrest are in stainless steel.

A 2.0-liter in-line-four twin turbo engine powers the John Cooper Works model, with both the six-speed manual and Steptronic sports transmission putting down 231hp and 320Nm to the ground. With the manual, the car's 0-100kph sprint is achieved in 6.3 seconds, while the same acceleration is achieved in 6.1 seconds using the slushbox-equipped model.

No word yet on how soon British United Automobiles can bring this special model to our market.
