Well, that’s a surprise

In case you haven’t heard, the current-generation Mitsubishi Montero Sport lives for another year with yet another update. Granted, it’s a relatively major one with a new engine and transmission, but it’s still largely the same SUV that we first saw in 2015.

Mitsubishi promised that we could expect an all-new Montero Sport sometime in 2025, and we’re holding on to their promise. At the moment, however, there isn’t much in the way of teasers or other statements from the automaker…until now.

The company’s North American operations recently published a press release called Momentum 2030. There, it spoke of plans to release a whole host of all-new models with various powertrain choices, ranging from hybrids to pure electric. The photo it released also showed seven all-new and/or updated models that will be launched within the next couple of years.

Taking center stage in the photo is the D:X Concept that we saw during the Japan Mobility Show 2023. But looking around, the model in the top left caught our attention. It’s big, has squared-off side mirrors, and has a prominent shoulder line. It looks like a proper SUV instead of a crossover, too.

Could it be the next-generation Mitsubishi Montero Sport?

Hold on, isn’t the Montero Sport unavailable in the US? Well, it was available at some point in time, being sold there in one (long) generation from 1996 to 2005. The teaser hints at a possible return to the US market after nearly 20 years. Looking at the current midsize SUV market over there, it appears Mitsubishi wants to have another go at the market it once did well in the States.

Shadowy figure aside, what can we expect? Well, Mitsubishi didn’t mention anything at all about the models it will launch in the next few years. The company sure wants to keep us on our toes when it comes to future models, and that tactic of not really saying much seems to be working. In this case, Mitsubishi has, quite literally, let the picture do the talking.

Mitsubishi XForce with EV model

There are a couple more things of interest in the lone teaser photo. On the upper right side appears to be the XForce, hinting that that the subcompact crossover might actually make it Stateside. Beside the ‘Montero Sport’ is what appears to be either a small hatchback or mini crossover, while second from the right is what could be an electric crossover.

We’ll know more once the company releases more details. One thing is for sure, though, Mitsubishi will be a very busy company for the next six years.
